Hurricane Katrina: A Case Study in Disaster and Relief examined the historical, societal, cultural, environmental,
and political issues raised by the Hurricane Katrina disaster.
Through multiple disciplines and faculty lectures, the course
sought to understand the complex issues of relief and rebuilding.
Students spent their spring break in the region contributing
their personal service to the relief and rebuilding efforts. For

Over the course of the semester a number of guest speakers were
brought in to help students understand the communities that the
hurricane hit as well as the relief efforts that are currently
underway. Some of these guests included: Jarvis DeBerry, Editorial
Writer for the New Orleans Times Picayune; Jim
Davis - Director of the Gephardt Institute and Professor Emeritus of Political
Science; Carol Camp Yeakey - Director of the Center for Urban
Studies; and Erin Richards - University of Missouri Journalism
Graduate Student and Reporter during Hurricane Katrina for
