Hurricane Katrina: A Case Study in Disaster and Relief

Hurricane Katrina: A Case Study in Disaster and Relief examined the historical, societal, cultural, environmental, and political issues raised by the Hurricane Katrina disaster. Through multiple disciplines and faculty lectures, the course sought to understand the complex issues of relief and rebuilding. Students spent their spring break in the region contributing their personal service to the relief and rebuilding efforts. For more information on the service aspect of this class, click on the Service link.

Over the course of the semester a number of guest speakers were brought in to help students understand the communities that the hurricane hit as well as the relief efforts that are currently underway. Some of these guests included: Jarvis DeBerry, Editorial Writer for the New Orleans Times Picayune; Jim Davis - Director of the Gephardt Institute and Professor Emeritus of Political Science; Carol Camp Yeakey - Director of the Center for Urban Studies; and Erin Richards - University of Missouri Journalism Graduate Student and Reporter during Hurricane Katrina for the Columbia Missourian. For a complete list of guests, please click on the Class link. Some of these lectures are also available as podcasts.

The course was featured on March 8 on KSDK News Channel 5 in St. Louis.

Students were also encouraged to keep up with current events concerning Hurricane Katrina. The following are the current headlines from the major news wire services courtesy of Yahoo News.
