TA Teaching Tips
"TA Teaching Tips" is a web supplement to the Teaching Assistant Handbook. This collection of tips for teaching assistants is an attempt to provide a way for experienced teaching assistants to share their experiences, insights, and ways of doing things with other teaching assistants. It is not a systematic manual on either teaching or assisting, but you may find some invaluable tips which will help you be an excellent teaching assistant and, in the long run, a first-rate teacher. Many of our graduate students aim for careers as college or university teachers and if this is your goal, your work as a teaching assistant will probably be your first introduction to what will become a major part of your life's work. In addition, your evaluations as a TA will be part of what prospective employers look at in evaluating you as a potential colleague. Excellence as a TA demonstrates your potential as a teacher. Washington University has many gifted teaching assistants, some of whom are recognized as recipients of the Dean's Award for Teaching Excellence. The Teaching Assistant Committee of the Graduate Council wanted to find
a way to enable experienced TAs to share their insights with others, and
this online compilation is the result.
