Workshops: Learn to Use the World Wide Web for Academic Professional Development

This series of three workshops was developed and offered in the Summer of 1997. The series will be offered periodically. These web pages are also conceived as tools for independent study. Feel free to use these pages in your own teaching, but we request that the Washington University Graduate School Arts and Sciences be informed and the course development team be credited.

Session 1: Putting a Page on the Web

What do you learn? - In this session, each participant will create a draft of a web page linked to a document they bring to post on the Web. Participants will learn basic HTML concepts and skills including: Participants will also learn to convert Word format documents to HTML format.What do you need ? - Session 1 is designed for beginners with an interest in learning basic Web skills. Participants should have a working knowledge of Microsoft Word processing. Participants should bring a PC disk with a document that they would like to post on the Web, such as a curriculum vitae or course syllabus.

Session 2: Using the Web as a Teaching Tool

What do you learn? - In this session, participants will create course homepages linked to course documents such as syllabi, homework sets, class notes, etc. In addition, workshop discussion will focus on generating ideas for making use of the Web as a teaching tool, both in and out of the classroom. What do you need? - The prerequisite is Workshop session 1 or basic familiarity with HTML programming. Participants should bring a PC disk with a course syllabus or homework set that they would like to post on the Web.

Session 3: Using the Web for Career Placement

What do you learn? - In this session, participants will develop personal homepages linked to curriculum vitae. In addition, workshop discussion will focus on generating ideas for making use of the Web as a job search tool.What do you need? - The prerequisite is Workshop session 1 or basic familiarity with HTML programming. Participants should bring a PC disk with a curriculum vitae that they would like to post on the Web.For more information, contact the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at 935-7355.
