Reading Dorwood

  • Don't try to learn the names of the colonial officers (except Lugard) or memorize the whole history of British dealings with the Tiv. Focus on the main point(s) of the Tiv case study.
  • Consider the Dorwood article along with the lecture. The Tiv are being compared to the Hausa. Start by knowing basic background -- where these groups are located, roughly when the British was trying to subjugate them.
  • How did the British subjugate and govern the Hausa? What aspects of Hausa society were vital to these methods? How did the British experience with the Tiv differ? What elements of Tiv socio-political organization accounted for the difference? How did the British respond to the problems in governing the Tiv?
  • What was the basic British view on the "natural" social organization in Africa? Was this view shared by all colonial officers? (Note a good example to the contrary in the Dorwood paper) What is a tribe anyway, according to Fried? Did the Tiv have chiefs?
