DRAMA AUDITIONS FOR 2008-2009 PAD SEASON
The Performing Arts Department is pleased to announce auditions for the 2008-09 season. Auditions are open to the entire university community, and we strongly encourage new students and non-majors to participate as we may have a role for you! The Performing Arts Department is committed to diversity in casting.
Dates: Thursday, August 28 and Friday, August 29
Callbacks: Saturday, August 30 and Sunday, August 31
You may sign up for an audition time on the PAD Callboard located in the hall by the main office of the PAD (Mallinckrodt 312).
This season’s Drama productions are: Of Thee I Sing by George Kaufman and Morrie Ryskind, Lyrics by Ira Gershwin, Music by George Gershwin, Directed by Jeffery Matthews (Oct. 24-Nov. 2) Boston Marriage by David Mamet, Directed by Annamaria Pileggi (Nov. 20-23) Hamlet by William Shakespeare, Directed by Henry Schvey (Feb. 13-22) Candlestick Park by Elizabeth Birkenmeyer (A.E. Hotchner Playwriting Competition winner) Directed by Andrea Urice (March 26-29) Mother Courage by Bertolt Brecht, Directed by William Whitaker (April 17-26)
You may choose to audition for all of the productions, or you may target specific productions in which you are particularly interested. If you are auditioning for Of Thee I Sing, you are asked to prepare 36 “bars” of a song from the 1920’s, 30’s, or early 40’s. Please bring sheet music with you as there is an accompanist provided. If you are auditioning for Hamlet, you are asked to prepare a piece from Shakespeare, at least 14 lines long. If you are auditioning for Hamlet, and any or all of the other shows, you may use the Shakespeare piece as your audition for the other productions. If you are not auditioning for Hamlet, you may simply present a contemporary piece. You will be given a time limit of 3 minutes. NOTE: If you are a Drama Major enrolled in the Acting 3-4 sequence, you are expected to audition with 2 contrasting pieces. These advanced students will be given a 5 minute time slot. If you are auditioning for Mother Courage, please note that the roles of Mother Courage, Eilif, Cook, Chaplain, Yvette, Sergeant, and some smaller roles require singing. If you would like to be considered for one of these singing roles, indicate this on your audition sheet, and simply audition just as you would for Of Thee I Sing. Very Important: There are many fine roles for non-singers in Mother Courage, so please, if you do not sing, not to worry! We still want you to audition.
Please fill out the color coded audition sheets you will find on the callboard after August 15, and bring them to the audition. If you do not have a prepared audition piece, you will find pieces that you may quickly memorize at the callboard as well. We strongly recommend that you read each of the plays before auditioning. Click here to download the script for Candlestick Park. The scripts for Of Thee I Sing, Boston Marriage, and Mother Courage, will be available at the Olin Library reserve desk by August 15. We look forward to seeing you at the auditions. Jeffery Matthews Coordinator of Acting and Directing
