GLOBAL FEMINISMS: THE ROLE OF WOMEN IN BUILDING STATES AND SOCIETIES

In the spring of 2006, Washington University hosted an groundbreaking international conference entitled "Global Feminisms: The Role of Women in Building States and Societies." The conference consisted of three panels and a roundtable. The Feminism and Governance panel explored women's and feminists' strategies for expanding women's citizenship into the political, social and economic realms. The Conflict, Gender Violence, and Memory in Social and State Reconstruction panel focused on how to conceptualize violence against women and examine how the frameworks of Truth Commissions address the needs of and offenses against women. The Feminism, Citizenship, and Diversity panel examined issues of ethnic and religious diversity. The roundtable discussion centered on Women & Gender Studies in the Twenty-First Century. Conference panelists included scholars from Croatia, India, Kenya, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Peru, Poland, South Africa, Trinidad and Tobago, and the U.S.
