GLOBAL TRANSNATIONAL FEMINISMS LECTURES:


2008-2009

This year the theme of the series is on Global/Transnational Feminisms and Sexuality. We define sexuality, broadly to include sexual behavior, reproduction, and reproductive health, as well as intimate relationships.

April 15, 2009
Denise Brennan, Ph.D., Professor of Sociology and Anthropology at Georgetown University will present a lecture entitled: "Settling In: Life after Trafficking in the United States." The event will take place in McMillan Cafe at 4 pm.

February 25, 2009
Sara Friedman, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Anthropology at Indian University will present a lecture entitled: "Marital Citizenship and the Threat of Similitude: Reproducing the Taiwanese Nation through Cross-Strait Marriages." The event will take place in McMillan Cafe at 4 pm.

December 3, 2008
Carolyn Sargent, Ph.D., Professor of Anthropology and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies will present a lecture entitled: "Sex in the City: How Polygamy Shapes the Everyday Lives of West African Women in Paris." The event will take place in McMillan Cafe at 4 pm.

November 6, 2008
Lauren Gulbas, Ph.D. will present a lecture entitled: "Recrafting Sexuality: Women's and Men's Experiences of Cosmetic Surgery in Venezuela." The event will take place in McMillan Cafe at 4 pm.

2007-08

The 2007-08 lecture series focused on Global/ Transnational Feminisms and Gender Justice. We define justice broadly to include questions of ethics, historical memory, work, health, and human rights.

Winifred Poster, Assistant Professor of Sociology and Women's Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign, will present our second lecture in Global Feminisms. Professor Poster's talk, "Transnational Intimacies of Information and Communication Technology: Gender, Sexuality, Ethnicity and Nation in Indian Call Centers", is at 4pm in Hurst Lounge, Duncker 201.
